Who we are

GridNest (gridnest.co.uk) is an independently run website providing guides on UK home energy grants, costs, and electrical safety. It is not affiliated with the UK Government, GOV.UK, Ofgem, or any energy supplier.

For the purposes of UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, the data controller for this site is:

What personal data we collect

  • Server and log data — your IP address, browser type, device type, and pages visited, collected automatically by our hosting provider for security and performance purposes.
  • Cookies and similar technologies — see the Cookie Policy section below.
  • Information you give us directly — if you use a contact form, we collect your name, email address, and message content.
  • Analytics data — aggregated, largely anonymised usage statistics via Google Analytics (only if you consent to analytics cookies).

We do not collect financial information, government ID numbers, or health data, and we do not require you to create an account to use this site.

How we use your data

  • To operate, secure, and improve the website.
  • To respond to messages sent through the contact form.
  • To understand which content is useful (analytics), only with your consent.
  • To serve advertising, including personalised advertising, only where you have consented to advertising cookies.

Legal basis for processing

  • Legitimate interest — for basic site security, fraud prevention, and server logs necessary to keep the site running.
  • Consent — for any non-essential cookie (analytics, advertising) and for responding to a contact form submission you’ve chosen to send.

You can withdraw consent at any time via the cookie settings link in the site footer.

Cookies

We use a cookie consent tool to ask for your permission before setting any cookie that isn’t strictly necessary. You can change your preferences at any time using the “Cookie Settings” link in the footer.

If you decline analytics or advertising cookies, you’ll still see ads on this site, but they’ll be less personalised (contextual rather than based on your browsing history), and we won’t be able to measure site usage in detail.

Third parties we work with

  • Google AdSense / Google Ads — serves advertising on this site. Google may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. You can opt out of personalised advertising via Google’s Ads Settings.
  • Google Analytics — provides aggregated visitor statistics.
  • Namecheap — processes server logs as part of hosting the site.

Some of these providers may process data outside the UK/EEA (for example, on Google’s global infrastructure). Where this happens, it’s covered by Google’s own Standard Contractual Clauses and data processing terms.

How long we keep data

  • Server logs: typically retained for a short rolling period by our host for security purposes.
  • Contact form messages: kept only as long as needed to respond to your query, then deleted.
  • Analytics data: retained per Google Analytics’ standard retention settings (adjustable in your Analytics account).

Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Ask what personal data we hold about you and get a copy (right of access).
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate data.
  • Ask us to delete your data, where applicable.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing.
  • Withdraw consent for cookies at any time.
  • Complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) if you think we’ve mishandled your data.

To exercise any of these rights, email contact@gridnest.co.uk.

Children’s privacy

This site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time — for example, if we add new advertising partners or analytics tools. The “last updated” date at the top will reflect the most recent change.
